TALK AND CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERT WITH FINNISH CONDUCTOR

Not a Russian event, even though Shostakovich is on this evening's bill and it happens to be the anniversary of Nikita Khrushchev's birth. Instead Esa-Pekka Salonen from Finland will give a music talk from 6pm before conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra from 7.30pm. Tonight's programme centres on Mahler, as well as Shostakovich.

Tickets can be booked on 020 7242 0240 (10am to 5pm). Ask about possible concessions. Location: Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, London SE1. Nearest tube stations: Embankment (Bakerloo, Northern, Circle and District lines) and Waterloo (Jubilee, Bakerloo and Northern lines).
