July 13 2002, Saturday, 11am-4pmNEW DESIGNERS FROM ANGLIA, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, EXETER, LOUGHBOROUGH, NOTTINGHAM, PLYMOUTH, SOMERSET, WOLVERHAMPTON, ETC. DISPLAY THEIR PRODUCTS (INC. BIKE), FURNITURE, ILLUSTRATIONS (INC. PHOTOGRAPHY OF HORSES AND NEPAL) AND MULTIMEDIAWe counted 92 departments from
various colleges and universities from England, Scotland and Wales exhibiting at
this year's second-stage of the "New Designers 2002 Exhibition" at Islington's
fine exhibition hall, along Upper Street. We were impressed by computer-aided
design (CAD) done by the Anglia Polytechnic University students and the fine
furniture on show by students from the Buckinghamshire Chilterns University
College. Exeter School of Arts and Designs, like several of the universities
exhibiting, had three faculties exhibiting... each with good works on show. We
have to say we were every impressed with the bike designed by James Coleman
(Loughborough University) who we chatted to on Thursday. The basic idea behind
the thinking of his design for the bike is to, as he put it, have good strength
to weight ratios.
Being the travelling sort of we also enjoyed University of Wolverhampton student, Dawn Lashley's exhibition of photographs of Nepal. One student at Plymouth College of Art and Design had some interesting photographs of horses on show, which we liked. Not only was there photography to temp our visual taste-buds, but nearby we came across interesting interactive media (i.e. multimedia) put together by students from Nottingham Trent University. Several universities from London also were on show, with some novel ideas. One that impressed us was that of Dian Handayani, a student from South Bank University. She was showing off her "Spiraflow: Portable Domestic Heat Recovery Ventilation" which is self-explanatory. Less of heat, just go along and enjoy yourselves for an afternoon. Admission: £7.50. Location: Business Design Centre, 52 Upper Street, London, N1. Tube station: Angel (Northern line).
