November 27 2002, Wednesday, 6.15pmFREE TIBETAN CONCERT AT UNIVERSITY IN CENTRAL LONDON - DAYS BEFORE MONKS, FROM LABRANG MONASTERY, DO PERFORMANCES IN BRIGHTON AND SOUTHAMPTON - TO BE FOLLOWED BY...Once again we are grateful for another e-mail message - from subscriber, Gordon Beal - sent through the Kensington International Society (KIS) e-mail group. Due to the firemen's strike, Russell Square tube station will be closed, so the meeting place is changed slightly: Gordon will meet, those interested in going along, just outside the tube station and NOT near the ticket office. The e-mail, we received recently, stated, 'Meet Gordon on Wednesday 27 November between 6.15 and 6.30pm at Russell Square tube station (Piccadilly Line, Zone 1) near ticket office to go to the Brunei Gallery at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) for a concert given by 22 musician monks from Labrang Lamasery. We will hear sacred Buddhist chants and ceremonial music with flutes, tuned gongs, drums, mouth organs, dulcimers and lutes.
The group will also chant sutras in the special low resonance found in Tibet. The concert starts at 7pm, and it is free, so we need to arrive in good time to be sure of getting seats together. (The same concert can be heard the day before at the Royal Festival Hall with tickets priced between £10 and £15!). Latecomers: SOAS lies between the NW corner of Russell Square and Gower Street. Once you're in the grounds of SOAS, the Brunei Gallery is in the first building on the left, in the basement. Suggestion: those who wish may go for a drink at "The Goose" Pub (upstairs bar if open) afterwards. This pub is at the corner of Coram and Marchmont Streets.'
