January 17 2003, Friday, 6.45pm & 8.50pmNEAR HAMMERSMITH'S RIVERSIDE: SEE CISSE'S FILM FROM MALI, FOLLOWED BY HAROUN'S CHAD/FRANCE PRODUCED FILM, BOTH FOR £5.50 (OR LESS)Today is the first of two consecutive evenings to see a film double bill from Africa that cover father-son relationships. Yes, it is a great - if unusual, chance to see two films from the African continent, which were produced (some 15-years apart) on either side of the Millennium. The first film: a production from Mali, is called Brightness - The Light / "Yeelen" (1987, 104 mins). Directed by Souleyman Cisse, it is about some members of the "Bambara." The film has been well reviewed.
Following it will be the equally well reviewed, though shorter, Our Father / "Abouna" (2002, 81 mins). It is a Chad and French production and tells the story about children growing up, without their father. Mahamet Saleh Haroun directed the film. Both films have English subtitles. Only £5.50 (concessions: £4.50) to see both films. Reservations can be made by ringing the box office on 020 8237 1111. Location: Riverside Studios, Crisp Road, London, W6. Tube station: Hammersmith (Piccadilly, District and Hammersmith & City lines).
