March 15 2003, Saturday, 10am-6pm"BLAST!" - YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER GLASSMAKERS FROM CUMBRIA, DURHAM, LANCASHIRE, NORTHUMBERLAND - AND EVEN FROM POLAND - AS THEY EXHIBIT GLASS OF ALL TYPES: BARIUM; CAST; KILN-FORMED; PĀTE DE VERRE & STAINED PLUS JEWELLERY & SCULPTURE AT GALLERY IN CORK STREET'S SIX-DAY EXHIBITIONFor us, it was a journey of discovery last Tuesday when we visited "Blast 2003" - an exhibition which describes itself as, "London Showcase of Contemporary Designer Glass." And today is last day to see this exhibition of 14 glassmakers from the north of England, which has been organised by the Cohesion Glass Network with the support of the Tyne & Wear Partnership Single Programme and sponsorship of the Double Maxim Beer Company. The exhibitors, whose works are on show, are: Brian Addison, Kirsteen Aubrey, Effie Burns, Goshka Bialek, Mike Davis, Peter Furlonger, Kathryn Hodgkinson, Chrstian Kirk, Gavin Marshall, Claudia Phipps, Elizabeth Reay, Roger Tye, Jo Vincent, Cate Watkinson and Sue Woolhouse. We talked to two of the exhibitors, who explained their exhibits. First, we met Elizabeth Reay from Tyne & Wear, who is displaying a large, "Glass Screen" with kiln formed soda and bullseye glass (£8,000).
Next, we met Kirsteen Aubrey from Lancaster,
who is displaying four pieces: Two "Pathway Series" works, with slate and glass
(£360 each) and two "Looking within" works, with freeblown glass (£850 each).
Prices for the other works on show range from £90 up to £8,500. There was so much to
see, we feel we may have missed some of these other exhibits and we may have to return for
a second visit. We also had a chat with Anne Tye, from Cohesion... basically to thank her
for bringing an interesting variety of talent together and then getting them and their
exhibits down here, to London. Go along and discover more for yourself, before those
pieces - hopefully few, that remain unsold - head back, northwards. Telephone 020 7437
2812 (during exhibition) or 0191 553 1219 (after exhibition) for more information, if
required. Location: The Gallery in Cork Street, 28 Cork Street, London, W1.
