June 28 2003, Saturday, 10am-6pmPIANIST & ARTIST, DOROTHY LEE ROBERTS' .'..MENU OF MUSIC EXPRESSED THROUGH PAINTING...' FEATURES OVER EIGHTY WORKS, WHICH INCLUDE INTERNATIONALLY NAMED PIECES: CARIBBEAN, PARIS, SRI LANKA, TOLEDO, ETC., AT "NERVOUS ENERGY II" EXHIBITION LOCATED AT GALLERY IN SHEPHERDS MARKETWe enjoyed our visit to a large exhibition, of over eighty works, by the pianist and artist Dorothy Lee Roberts. As you enter the gallery, you will see "Nervous Energy" (£1,900) - just one of many of the artist's abstract pieces on show. On the back wall, at the left corner, you will see four miniatures - one above the other: "Close up" (£165); "Landscape" (£165); "Pink Flowers" (£170) and "Roses in a Vase" (£170). On the same wall, but lower down and towards the left, you will see the marvellous, "Polish Clown" (£750). About this, Dorothy tells me that Soutine influenced her, as she uses a lot of black colour in her works. And the portrait is as good as any done by Soutine! Another artist that influenced Dorothy was Monet. Dorothy's "A Stained Glass Window" (£675), which is ceramic paint on glass, reminds me of the famous impressionist artist. Our favourite was probably "Burlesque" (£2,000), with so many colours in numerous waves and swirls.
We also liked the less expensive
"Waterfall" (£360), with the greens, reds and purples it features. Then there
were the figurative, "Evening Stroll" (£745) and "Fete Galante"
(£800), which we enjoyed. One piece, that is, literally, out-of-this-world is
"Maelstrom" which, the artist told us, reflects her interest in the Solar System
and Universe. Go along and see which you like and you might be lucky to hear some of
Dorothy's pianos pieces in the background as you browse the gallery's two floors: ground
and basement. Talking of which, be sure not to miss "Red, White and Blue"
(£2,600) - one of the larger pieces on the lower level. As you can probably guess, there
is something for everyone, as prices range from as little as £150 up to £8,000.
