July 20 2003, Sunday, 9.30am for 9.53am train

JOIN hteL SUBSCRIBER, GORDON BEAL, FOR TRAIN JOURNEY FOLLOWED BY 'COUNTRYSIDE WALK' IN KENT WITH MEMBERS OF JAPAN SOCIETY PLUS JETAA (JAPAN EXCHANGE AND TEACHING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION) WALKING CLUB

Once again we are grateful for Gordon Beal's e-mail message - recently sent through the Kensington International Society (KIS) e-mail group. Here is an extract of what he says, 'Meet Gordon on Sunday 20 July, between 9.30 and 9.40am, at Charing Cross Main Line Station (near the ticket office) to catch the 9.53am to Petts Wood. From 9.40 to 9.45am, we will wait at the head of the relevant platform. Please try not to miss the train as the next one isn't until half an hour later, and I'm sorry but we wouldn't be able to wait for you at Petts Wood! Charing Cross tube station (Zone 1) is served by the Northern and Bakerloo Lines, but please note that we are meeting at the railway station (not the tube station). This station is also within easy walking distance of Embankment tube station (District and Circle Lines) - it would be quicker to walk from there than changing lines. This walk is organised by the Japan Society's Younger Members' Group and the JETAA (Japan Exchange and Teaching Alumni Association) Walking Club. You will need a Travelcard for Zones 1 to 6. We will be walking the first stage of the marathon London Outer Orbital Path (Loop 3), a total of about 9 miles or 14.5 kilometres.

This will be a gentle stroll (not a route-march) with plenty of breaks to admire the beautiful surrounding countryside. The walk will take us through Jubilee Country Park, Crofton Wood, Farnborough, High Elms, past the former residence of William Pitt the Younger at Holwood House and across West Wickham Common. Please bring suitable footwear and appropriate clothing in case of rain. We will break for lunch at about 12.15 or 12.30pm for about an hour at a pub in Farnborough (this is Farnborough, Kent, not Farnborough, Hampshire!). There are 2 pubs in the High Street, and latecomers can, if they wish, call Liz (number below) to find out which one we're in, if you think you can find your own way to Farnborough (nearest station: Orpington). If you prefer to bring a picnic with you to eat in the sunshine, there will be plenty of suitable places. We will travel back to London from Hayes by a replacement bus service to Lewisham and then train, arriving back in Central London late afternoon or early evening. Trains from Lewisham go to Charing Cross, Waterloo East and London Bridge. In case of any difficulties on the day, please call the following mobile number.... Please note: this number is only for use on the day of the walk..'..
