November 15 2003, Saturday, 11am-7pmDISCOVER SCENES OF CANALS, FIGURES, LAKES & STREETS PLUS VIEWS OF CUBA, FRANCE, GAMBIA, HONG KONG, ITALY, MALLORCA, NEW ZEALAND, SARDINIA, ETC., ALL THROUGH TREMENDOUS COLLECTION OF NEW PAINTINGS BY ARTIST, PATRICK GIBBS AT GALLERY IN CORK STREET - AND WHAT IS THIS ABOUT DOORWAYS?Today is the last day to see artist, Patrick Gibbs' "New Paintings" exhibition, currently on in one of the art galleries in London's Cork Street. We went along last Monday, and wandered among the large throng of guests that had turned up for the exhibition's seemingly successful private view. Paintings were being reserved and sold, one after the other, and details were being meticulously recorded by two helpful people behind the gallery's only desk. Prices range from £650 each for "Castle Durrow" and "Lake Hayes, New Zealand" up to £4,450 each for "Fields near Nelson, New Zealand", along with one of our favourites and the already-sold, "Hills near Nelson, New Zealand" - a view looking down from a mountain onto some green and grassy hill - and "St Marks Canal, Venice." The art on show reveals water scenes, not only in Italy and New Zealand, but also in Africa - with "Beach Scene, Tanji, Gambia" (£3,450). Havana, the capital city of Cuba, is well represented with about two dozen paintings, with such titles as, "Double Bass Player, Havana" (£1,450) and "Woman with Cigar, Havana" (£750). There is also a scene of a Cuban doorway, priced at £695 and - from our side of the Atlantic Ocean - one might also be interested in "Doorway, Auch, France" (£1,050) and "Doorway, Cadaques, Spain" (£750).
When we asked him [the artist, Patrick Gibbs]
where he gets his inspiration for his paintings he told us it was from his travels. And,
as for the future, he says he has plans to visit Madagascar. But returning to the present,
with a look at another island... Sardinia. Another of our favourites is "Street
Scene, Alghero, Sardinia" (£695), which is still available, when we phoned the
gallery on Friday afternoon. The person we talked to on the phone was able to tell us that
well over half of Patrick's works had been sold, and that only 27 were still available.
So, the advice is to get along soon and purchase one of two good Christmas presents before
everything is sold. Telephone 020 7437 2812, during exhibition hours, for more information
or - jokingly - maybe to commission a painting of a Madagascan doorway. Admission free.
Location: The Gallery in Cork Street, 28 Cork Street, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park
