December 20 2003, Saturday, 10am-8pm"OUT OF AFRICA" EXHIBITION OF CERAMICS, PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, POSTCARDS & SCULPTURE - INSPIRED BY THREE ARTISTS' "RALEIGH INTERNATIONAL" EXPEDITION TO NAMIBIA - ON VIEW AT GALLERY IN LONDON'S SHEPHERD'S MARKETCarlotta Maitland Smith, Candy Morgan and Gemma Wightman are three young artists who - after venturing across Africa, to Namibia, on a "Raleigh International" expedition - decided to come together, pool resources and have an art exhibition to display their varied works, much of which were inspired by their travels to the African continent. Carlotta - a speaker of several European languages, is exhibiting a collection of black and white photographs on fibre paper, on the gallery's ground floor. The prints range in price from a dozen at £160 up to three at £230 unframed, with framed versions costing £20 more. In addition to these there are about a dozen prints on resin-coated paper (mostly priced at £80) and about half a dozen colour inkjet prints on cotton paper (mostly priced at £70). All her prints are limited to an edition of 75, except for copies of her 2004 Calendar (£8.50) and postcards (£1.30 each or £6 for a packet of 5). Candy, a fellow-Londoner, has over two-dozen works on show, most of which are paintings that range in price from £120 for "Namibian Landscapes" up to £450 for "The Boys." In addition to these, she has turned her artistic talents to producing sculptures, lights and blank cards (£2 each or £10 for 6). Most of these can be seen in the gallery's basement. As for Candy's sculptures and lights when we visited the gallery earlier this week, two had already been sold and the rest were pending highest offers.
The third member of the group, Gemma, hails
from Guildford (Surrey) and is a graduate in three dimensional art and design. She has ten
works on show, which range in price from £45 for "Small Spheres," up to £850
for, "Red Brick Clay Progression." We liked her, "Turquoise Lustre
Progression" (£620) and "Powder Blue Lustre Progression" (£750), both on
view in the gallery's basement. Other favourite pieces we had - from the other intrepid
explorers, were, Carlotta's photograph entitled, "Two Girls," (showing two
Namibians in the foreground with the Namibian landscape in the background) and her series
of Silhouette's, taken in the villages of north-west Namibia. As for Candy's works, we
liked her, "Messum" (red and yellow Namibian landscape, with blue sky) and
"Tyre Boy," (Namibian boy sitting on a red tyre). This latter work of Candy's
was produced using emulsion and acrylic on canvas board whilst some of her other works we
done using coffee washes with either pen or pencil, which we thought was amazing!
Needless, to say we have only touched on what is on offer. Go along and discover more for
yourself. Admission free. E-mail... or... or look at Carlotta's website - that features
her photography from around the world - for more information, if required. Location: 54
The Gallery, Shepherd Market, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly
and Victoria lines).
