January 10 2004, Saturday, 12pm-6pmSOPHIE DARE GALLERIES' INAUGURAL EXHIBITION OF YOUNG CONTEMPORARY INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS INCLUDES STREET SCENES OF ANGEL & NEW YORK BY SWEDISH ARTIST, VON GERBER, AND LARGE SCENES OF BETHNAL GREEN & SHOREDITCH BY GUIPUZCOA ARTIST, GARCIAToday is the last day for the inaugural exhibition put on by Sophie Dare Galleries. It is titled, 'I Dreamt in the City' and is temporarily based at Mall Galleries before being moved to new premises - a converted church, in Curzon Street. We went along a few days ago to the very well-attended opening (with live classical music and auction included) and met two of some 20 young contemporary artists that Sophie has managed to gather together. These talented people include: Susan Bower; Harriet Butler; Sabine Cherki; Yuko Kondo; Matthew Sibley; Daphne Stephenson; Charles Williams; Tamsin Atkinson; Sophie Abbott; Alessia Avellino; Fransisco Centofanti; Lucie Cookson; Carlos Diaz; Nathan Ford; Carl Randall; Andrew Sargant; Mike Smith and John Spielman. The artists we met were Henrik von Gerber, from Sweden, and Iker Garcia, from Gipuzcoa - a Basque province, in the north of Spain.
And, as the title of the exhibition suggests,
both have produced street scenes, of interest to them, in their own distinct styles. Our
suggestion is to walk down your own street, and get to either of the galleries' locations
and see/find out more for yourself. We can confidently say that, for all Londoners and
city-dwellers looking for fresh new artistic talent, forthcoming exhibitions at Sophie
Dare Galleries are sure to be worth getting along to see. Look out for further, future
reviews of the artists listed here. E-mail... or telephone 020 7493 4939 for more
information, if required. Location (until January 10): Mall Galleries, 17 Carlton House
Terrace, London, SW1. Tube station: Charing Cross (Bakerloo & Northern lines).
Location (from January 12): Sophie Dare Galleries, 7 Curzon Street, London, W1. Tube
station: Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly & Victoria lines).
