February 3 2004, Tuesday, 10am-6pm (continues until March 28 2003, Sunday, 10am-6pm)AFTER EXHIBITION BY JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHER, SUGIMOTO, YOUR CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE, "STATE OF PLAY" - GROUP SHOW BY ARTISTS FROM GERMANY, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, ITALY, LEICESTERSHIRE, MEXICO, NEW YORK, POLAND, SCOTLAND, SWITZERLAND & WEST YORKSHIRESome of you will have enjoyed photographer and installation artist, Hiroshi Sugimoto's exhibition (November 18 2003-January 18 2003) at the Serpentine Gallery, a public art gallery located in Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park. It spans over a decade of work, which includes, "Seascapes," "Pine Landscapes" and his installation, "In Praise of Shadows." And as for that multi-panelled, 10-metre-long photograph, it would be hard to miss. It is titled, "North Pacific Ocean" and was taken in Ohkurosaki, Japan. Well, a good deal closer to home comes the follow-on exhibition: a group show featuring artists from numerous countries and several English counties. We are grateful for the press release we received in the post recently. 'State of Play,' it begins, 'presents the work of a group of international artists whose practice is characterised by spontaneity, improvisation, informality and wit.' The list of artists, whose works for this exhibition have been curated by the Serpentine's Chief Curator, Rochelle Steiner, include, 'Italian-born artist-provacateur Maurizio Cattelan...; ...Turner Prize Winner Martin Creed [b. Wakefield, West Yorkshire]...; and New York artist Tony Feher...' The press release continues to list the other artists, .'..videos of German-born Christian Jankowski... Mexican artist Gabriel Kuri...Polish-born, New York-based artist Aleksandra Mir...artist duo Tim Noble [b. Stroud, Gloucestershire] and Sue Webster [b. Leicester, Leicestershire] create installations that explore the status of the artist within consumer and celebrity culture....video installations of Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist... Scottish artist David Shrigley... German artist Andreas Slominski...'
