MIDDLESEX SCULPTOR & ARTISTS - ANGELA CHRISTIE AND ASSOCIATES - EXHIBIT PAINTINGS, PRINTS & SCULPTURE AT GALLERY

One of the galleries in Shepherd Market has, since Monday, being exhibiting paintings, prints and sculpture by Angela Christie and two of her associates - namely her husband, Carl and daughter, Helen. It is the sculptures that attracted our attention, when walking past a couple of nights ago. So much so, that we were encouraged to enter the very what-felt-like homely space within a very pleasant part of Mayfair. Looking first at Angela's 16 sculptures, we see they range in price from £550 up to £2,600, with several at £650 and several more at £750. The five alabaster sculptures, lined up in the gallery's back room, which we saw from the pedestrianised street just outside were: "spirit" (£750); "netsuke" (£850); "ice dance" (£1,200); "head III" (£1,300) and - our favourite, the already-sold, "blue torso" (£1,100). The name given, to each piece, we discovered reflects the feeling of that piece. But which was the sculptor's favourite? This, we also discovered! It is "zephuros" (£2,600), named after the god of the west wind. Made entirely of ancaster stone, one can actually see the tiny bits that the stone is comprised of. It is also the type of stone that Angela prefers working with, as one can get very sharp edges and lines when creating a work of art from it. So, do not miss it. "zephuros" faces you - on your left, as you pass from the gallery's front room to the back room.

Downstairs, away from all winds and predicted London snowfalls, you can appreciate what someone has termed "Cosmic" prints by the sculptor's daughter, Helen. Currently based in Bristol, printmaker Helen has produced a collection of hung and non-hung prints. Those that are actually hanging up downstairs, range in price from £200. Our favourite is the £1,500 print on canvas, "fractuals," which comprises numerous merging and coloured patterns with reds, greens, yellows and browns in predominance. Carl has half a dozen paintings on show, each priced at £350. Two are collages, titled "arc I" and "arc II" while four other works are paint-on-board paintings which are sequentially titled, and shaped, like diamonds. So, whether you are interested in diamonds, other stones or prints - which are more out of this world - you will find something of interest at 54, but only if you go today (the exhibition's last day).
