February 1 2004, Sunday, 11am-5.30pmVERY FRIENDLY, "WATERCOLOURS AND DRAWINGS FAIR" AT PARK LANE HOTELEnjoy the last day of the four-day, annual art event on three levels of the Park Lane Hotel. It is called, "The Watercolours and Drawings Fair" and it must be one of the friendliest art fairs we have ever been to. One should note that from what we could see - when we briefly visited the fair's second day - the average age of both exhibitors and visitors, seemed to be around the 45-54 mark, and possibly higher. As would be expected, everyone was very cheerful, kind and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed and warm. Complimentary iced water is available on each floor. September's press release confirms our friendliness findings, 'This fair has been described as "famously friendly." The exhibiting dealers welcome questions from visitors, and the opportunity to share their expert knowledge.' The release, we found, also gives more information, on the kind of works on show as well as pricing information, 'All the works for sale in this fair are original works drawn by hand, in charcoal, chalk, ink, pastel, pencil or watercolour.
The 5,000 pictures for sale will feature more
20th Century Modern British art than ever before, as well as contemporary work by living
artists. These works with be shown alongside Early English watercolours and Victorian
pictures. This mix of new and old art makes a visit to the Watercolours and Drawings Fair
a stimulating experience. The fair is a hugely popular event where crowds buy art and walk
away clutching their purchases. 'The presence of so many galleries under one roof ensures
that prices are remarkably competitive, and real bargains can be found' says fair
organiser, Richard Hodgson. Prices range from as little as £50 up to £100,000, with much
around £1,500.' As last year, there is a bar and cafe on site. Admission: £14, to
include 60-postcard catalogue, or £10 without (same prices as last year). Location: Park
Lane Hotel (easily spotted with the advertising hoarding for the fair, usually placed at
the entrance to the hotel), Piccadilly, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park (Jubilee,
Piccadilly and Victoria lines).
