February 17 2004, Tuesday, 10am-5pm (continues until March 7 2004, Sunday, 11am-5pm)WATERCOLOURED IMAGES OF PARTS OF AUSTRALIA, ITALY, SWITZERLAND, WALES, ETC., READY FOR YOU TO DISCOVER ON DAY BEFORE ROYALTY VISITS SOUTH LONDON ART GALLERY, NEAR RIVER THAMESEarlier this month the Royal Watercolour Society - now, based at the Bankside Gallery - opened the "Then & Now: Our Watercolour Tradition" exhibition. We went along to the press view to see a large selection of watercolours painted by a many watercolourists. Those that grabbed our interest included, Gregory Alexander's "Paddington Square, Sydney" (£1,800) showing Australian houses and a pathway with railings and Annie Williams' already-sold, "Corner in Thomas Hawks' Cottage" (£460), showing varied sized vases inside house with view to garden through a window. But our favourites have to be, David Gluck's very detailed and very scenic, "San Gennaro, Near Lucca, Italy II" (£1,000) and David Paskett's "Ski Runs, Saas Fee" (£3,500). The latter is an aerial, detailed and scenic view of a large Swiss mountain covered with snow along with many trees, buildings, etc. Prices for the other works on show range from £300 (for Jane Taylor's watercolour and gouache entitled, "The White Cap, Crouching Child") up to £4,650 (for Anthony Eyton's watercolour, "Welsh Waterfall"). There are also a couple which are NFS (not for sale). Boat and ship enthusiasts will especially enjoy the exhibition, as these floating vessels feature many times in the art works on display.
Go along, purchase and/or simply discover more
for yourself, today. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, are expected to
visit sometime tomorrow. They will probably sign the visitor's book, similar to the
historic one on display, as you enter the gallery located near The River Thames riverbank.
