March 7 2004, Sunday, 11am-2pmKATHARINE AMIES EXHIBITS PENCILLED ILLUSTRATIONS & WATERCOLOURS OF BOTANICAL BEAUTIES: FLOWERS, FRUIT, PLANTS & VEGETABLES IN WEEK-LONG EXHIBITION AT GALLERY IN LONDON'S WEST ENDWe were very impressed with former Chelsea Physic Gardens pupil, Katharine Amies' current week-long exhibition of botanical beauties, which is currently on in a gallery in Shepherd's Market. Four-dozen images of flowers, fruit, plants and vegetables are featured on the gallery's two floors. Our two favourites are the watercolour on paper, "Walnut" (31cm x 23cm, £245) on your right - beside some steps, after you enter the gallery and the pencil on paper, "Pineapple" (56cm x 44cm, £600), which can be found in the gallery's homely basement. The amount of detail and work that went into this latter work is tremendous, breath-taking! Can you imagine being asked to draw a detailed picture of a pineapple? Where would you start? And where would you finish? The mind boggles! Well, Katherine shows how it should be done.. neatly and precisely! One fact we learnt was that each work takes her between three days and three weeks to produce. Prices for these works, range from £200 (for each of four watercolours on paper: "Brussels sprout;" "Girolle mushrooms;" "Red chard" and "Yellow chard") up to £1,100 (for watercolour on paper, "Phalaenopsis Orchid").
By the time we left Monday's private view, over
20 of Katharine's works had already been sold. At most, that leaves (no pun intended) just
under 30 to be plucked for one or more of your walls. The advice is to get along now, and
be amazed! It is her first solo show, so no doubt we shall be hearing more about her works
in the future.
