April 5 2004, Monday 10am-6pm (continues until April 10 2004, Saturday, 10am-6pm).'..EXPLORE INTERPRETATIONS OF THE VISUAL DRAMA OF THE SHETLAND ENVIRONMENT...' AT CHARLOTTE STREET GALLERYOver a month ago we informed all our "hteL GOLD" and "hteL PLATINUM" subscribers about Ruth Brownlee's landscape and seascape exhibition, located at a commercial art gallery in Fitzrovia. This week marks the exhibition's last week, so let us look at the hosting gallery's press release - which we were very grateful to receive - in some depth. It begins, with a look at the artist and a description of the Isles that feature in her works. 'Ruth Brownlee is a landscape and seascape painter. Her interpretations of the brooding terrain and turbulent sea of the Shetland Isles evoke the extraordinary change of light associated with Northern Scotland.' It continues with a statement from the artist, herself, 'I am drawn by the constant changing elements in Shetland, particularly the drama of light upon the seas, the moods of weather playing upon the lands and vast skies. It has been fundamental to me to express the emotions and capture of the atmosphere from walks and sailing experiences throughout the Shetland Isles. My paintings explore interpretations of the visual drama of the Shetland environment and are concerned with capturing the atmosphere, the play of light on the sea and coastal landscape through mixed media.'
It all sounds very interesting, especially when
we read that, 'The exhilarating texture in the artists work is generated by her use of
mixed media and vast tonal variety, although the colours she uses are in fact very
limited.' Unfortunately, we missed the exhibition's private view but we do intend getting
along sometime this week now that our workload has eased considerably, due to the
forthcoming holiday period. We suggest you do the same!
