April 10 2004, Saturday, 10am-6.30pmSCULPTURES & PAINTED SCENES OF ENGLISH FIGURES, STREETS, ETC., ON SHOW AT VISITING EXHIBITION, "L.S. LOWRY AND THOSE HE INSPIRED" AT CORK STREET'S GALLERY 27Works by over a dozen artists, including the famous L.S. Lowry, are currently on show at Cork Street's Gallery 27. As the exhibition's title suggests, all works on show were chosen after a competition took place to find Lowryesque works, which have been produced by - what the catalogue refers to as, 'some of Britain's leading figurative artists and sculptors.' Namely, Harry Bell; Derek Carruthers; John Coombes; John Gledhill; Julie Held; Steven Lawler; Donald Myers; Anna Paik; Ricky Romain; Nicholas A. Simington; Clifford Stead, Simon Stringer and David Walton. Prices range from £800 each, for a couple of oil on canvases, up to £60,000 for Simon Stringer's sculpture, "The wheelchair, bronze and steel, lifestyles." The latter we enjoyed, as we did getting to see an already-sold, genuine Lowry.
Another picture that impressed us, was Clifford
Stead's London mixed-media landscape, "Celestial City" (32" x 21",
£3,500). As this is the exhibition's last day, for the Doncaster-based gallery, we
suggest you go along early and see the 48 works on show - before the pictures are taken
down and sculptures are carted away, to their new owners or packed to return to South
Yorkshire. Go along, and enjoy a breath of northern air with scenes of Leeds, Newcastle,
etc!
