May 15 2004, Saturday, 11am-4pm50+ MEMBERS OF "SOCIETY OF GRAPHIC FINE ART" EXHIBIT 100+ WORKS, INCLUDING SCENES OF MOROCCO, ITALY, CORNWALL PLUS RIVERSIDE SCENES OF CITY OF LONDON, ETC., IN "DRAWING THE LINE" EXHIBITION AT GALLERY IN MAYFAIRAnother art exhibition, that is having its last day in London's Cork Street, is a members-only exhibition that has been organised by Society of Graphic Fine Art (SGFA). Founded in 1919, its prime focus is to promote good drawing skills. And this certainly seems to have been achieved, when you get to view the 100+ works that are on show. Most mediums: graphite; mixed; paint; pencil; etc., have been used to produce the works on view, with the common denominator that they all are very well done, and finely produced. Let us have a brief look at several of the exhibiting artists, along with one of their international, national or local works. Internationally, we have Valerie Warren and her mixed media, "Morocco Essaouira: The Souk" (£850) which shows a street scene, with white buildings. Whilst we only briefly visited the gallery last Tuesday afternoon, we also noted several fine-looking pictures of Italy, by several artists. But what really interested us, the most, was local scenes of London! And, yes, there were plenty to enjoy. Not only did we like that fine and detailed interior view of The London Eye (possibly, Czech engineering at its best), but there were other London scenes, present on both the ground and basement floors of the gallery, which caught our eye. For example, Derek Carter's coloured pencil drawing, "Billingsgate, City of London" (£250) reveals some wonderful detail of some of the City's riverside buildings. But, what if your preference is for something outside London, something more national? Well, there too - there is plenty to see. West Penwith, in Cornwall, is just one outside-London, English scene on view. It can be seen in Kit Surrey's graphite and conte, "Granite Faces VII" (£640).
But what if you cannot make today's last day?
Well, you will be glad to know that the works by SGFA members will again be on show at
July's "Artists and Illustrators Exhibition" at Islington's "Business
Design Centre" as well as - some three months later - being on show at this autumn's
"The Open Exhibition," at Bath's Hotbath Gallery. Enthusiastic drawers and
illustrators will be glad to know that new members - we discovered - are always welcomed,
and the joining procedure involves a selection process. So, if you would like to be
considered for a position within the Society's near 100-strong membership (18 honorary; 59
full and 19 associate, according to their informative website.) definitely go along and
get in touch.
