June 12 2004, Saturday,ARTISTS, BARTON, JENKINSON, KNIGHT & WALLACE EXHIBIT PAINTINGS OF: PLANETS; SHEEP (INC. FROM DORSET, HAMPSHIRE, SUFFOLK & WILTSHIRE); NEW ZEALAND-INSPIRED ABSTRACTS PLUS SCULPTURES OF CHEETAHS, HORSES, PIGS, ETC.Today is the last day to see a group show, featuring several artists, two of whom we met last Monday. Charlie Barton - appropriately in this week, when Venus passed before the sun, is exhibiting three planetary paintings, each at £1,200. Our favourite is the blueish, Study of Venus No. 4." One of the artists we met is Victoria Jenkinson, a world traveller - having travelled within Australia and the United States. Jenkinson has produced a fine collection of watercolours, oils, etc., of mainly sheep. You cannot miss her sheep group portrait, in one of the front windows of the gallery, showing the already-sold, "Romney March sheep" (£3,500). Many of her other pictures depict several different breeds of sheep, including the framed watercolours on handmade paper: "Dorset Horn" (£450), "Hampshire Blackface Ewe" (£250), "Suffolk Blackface" (£400) and, our favourite, "Wiltshire Poll" (£250). Another of the artists we met is Sandra Knight. Born in New Zealand, Knight is a seasoned travelled of Australasia and her travels, in part, have inspired her colourful abstract paintings.
On your left, as you enter the gallery from the
street, you will see several pictures with Chinese happy-new-year titles. Further in - on
one of the gallery's inner walls, you will come across our favourite, with the New Zealand
sounding name, "Rotoroa" (£2,500). It is, in fact, an acrylic on three
canvases, side by side, inspired - no doubt, by that great New Zealand lake. We liked the
picture's lime greens, emerald greens, purples, dark blues and reds gushing forward on the
aqua-blue background. Caroline Wallace is exhibiting sculptures of cheetahs, horses and
pigs amongst other animals. And also pictures, of dogs, horses, etc. Our favourite is,
"In the Shade" (£750), showing two different coloured horses, looking in
opposite directions. Which brings us nicely on to giving you directions of how to get to
the well-worth visiting group exhibition. Here they are...
