FORMER ART STUDENT, AT NEW YORK’S "PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN," MARIE GUERLAIN’S, "BEINGS OF LIGHT" EXHIBITION OPENS AT CORK STREET’S ARNDEAN GALLERYDO NOT MISS HER FACES, FIGURES, NATIVE AMERICANS & PENCILLED SCULPTURES ON TODAY’S LAST DAY

Marie Guerlain, a former art student, at New York’s "Parson’s School of Design" is exhibiting her collection of paintings at the "Arndean Gallery" in London’s Cork Street. Her exhibition, entitled "Beings of Light" features a collection of paintings portraying faces, figures, Native Americans and pencilled sculptures. We liked Guerlain’s two pencilled drawings, of sculptures, at the back of the ground-floor level of the gallery. They are titled, "Sitting in Garden" and "Sitting in Garden II." On either side of them is a range of larger, beautifully and originally painted works of other figures, which include her depictions of Buddha statues. Our favourite, overall - as we told the very friendly documentary maker who was interviewing and filming the exhibition’s opening - is Guerlain’s 2004, oil on canvas, "Faces," which depicts a gathering of some 20 faces. "Large," would be one word to describe it, as it measures 1247mm x 1552mm! But, ‘a colourful melody of expression’ would be our preferred way to describe it. Appropriately, "Faces" faces you as you reach the very bottom step of the gallery’s winding staircase. On this level one can also see a variety of the artist’s styles, developed over time. Each picture is distinct, like a short journey to another place or time.

Thornton Associates’ press release, which we picked up at the opening puts it well, by ending with several thoughts, ‘Marie is a fascinating woman. Her background is steeped in the flamboyant and tempestuous world of the Paris fashion houses yet she is possessed of a contemplative and almost fragile nature. Nothing is more central to Mari than her interaction with and reaction to both nature and humanity. She has an extraordinary ability to find the divine within it and filter this almost organic energy through into her work. In a frenetic world Marie, through her observations of humanity and nature, takes us with her on a journey in which we explore with her the sacred spaces of our emotions and our own beings of light.’ Start your journey, for Cork Street on this, the last day of the exhibition.
