February 9 2005, Wednesday, 10am-6pm (continues until March 19 2005, Saturday, 10am-6pm)TWELVE LARGE-SCALE PSYCHOLOGICAL & STATUESQUE DANCING IMAGES BY AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER, PHILIP-LORCA diCORCIA, ON SHOW AT GALLERY, JUST OFF REGENT STREETLast week we
attended the opening reception of "Imageless Icons: Abstract Thoughts,"
an exhibition located at the sister gallery of the Heddon Street
"Gagosian." The gallery takes up a very large space on Britannia Street,
quite close to London’s King’s Cross. And when you get along to this
area of London – and soon-to-be future home of "Eurostar" - you will be
able to appreciate the works of over 20 artists, including the likes of
Francis Bacon, Damien Hirst, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. But, let
us look away from these – just, for the moment, and see what is opening
today, closer to the shopper’s haven of Regent Street. Well, it is
Wednesday - the day after yet another Gagosian opening reception! On the
walls of Heddon Street’s Gagosian from today, and for much of next
month, there are twelve large-scale dancing images by American
photographer, Philip-Lorca diCorcia. Quoting the gallery’s press
release, which we picked up last Thursday, ‘The works are shot in
various locations and in each case the dancers are not performing for an
audience but rather just for the artist himself, making the setting
strangely empty. Suspended in the air and starkly lit, each woman’s body
takes on the character of a statue.’
The release then
continues, ‘One of America’s leading photographers, diCorcia combines a
documentary tradition with the fictional works of cinema and advertising
to create a powerful link between reality, fantasy and desire.’ The
artist is quoted as saying, ‘Psychology is a reality for many people. I
try to show this. It may not, in fact, be the actual psychology of the
subject that I portray, but it is played out in the image and the
projection of that psychology into the surrounding space… Their image is
the outward facing front belied by the inwardly gazing eyes.’ What do
you think? Go along and discover more. We shall be there - at the
Tuesday opening, to see for ourselves and we would love to meet you, to
hear your comments. Promote YOUR event, for free! | Return to February 2005 ArchivesSubscribe to, "hteL FREE-TO-ATTEND," only £59.80 per annum |
