Monde Diplomatique (FLMD), together with the National Union of
Journalists (NUJ) and Campaign for Press & Broadcasting Freedom have
come together to organise a one-day conference entitled, “News For Sale:
Information In The Age Of Market-Driven Journalism.” Chairing the
morning session (10am-12.30pm), “Present: Impact of ‘Free’ Market On
Content, Control And Distribution Of News,” will be journalist, Victoria
Brittain, whilst Jeremy Dear, the General Secretary of the NUJ, will
chair the afternoon session (1.30pm-4.45pm), “Towards The Future:
Information As A Right & The Value Of Public Service Broadcasting.”
Subjects to be covered are: agreements (e.g. GATS); distribution;
European Union; Internet; Public Service Broadcasting; regulation versus
deregulation, etc. Speakers for the event include, Serge Halimi
(France); Prasun Sonwalkar (India); Marco Travaglio (Italy); Oksana
Antonenko (Russia); Stephen Barnet (UK) and John Nichols (US). To
