March 9 2005, Wednesday, 11am-6pm (continues until May 8 2005, Sunday, 2pm-6pm)

DISCOVER ENGAGING KNITTED-WORKS BY ARTISTS: LORTET (FRANCE); MORTON (U.S.); SANANDA (JAPAN); SPEIGHT (CANADA); WALTENER (BELGIUM) PLUS TEN OTHERS, IN LAST TWO MONTHS OF CRAFTS COUNCIL GALLERY’S TOURING INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION, “KNIT 2 TOGETHER: CONCEPT IN KNITTING,” BEFORE EXHIBITS TRAVEL WITH, “THE KNITTING AND STITCHING SHOWS,” TO ALEXANDRA PALACE, DUBLIN & HARROGATE

‘The domestic craft of knitting is back in vogue,’ is what is new, according to a recent press release from the Craft Council. We collected the release when we visited the Islington venue, late last month, for one of their press views. Considering the cold weather, the viewing was very well attended – crowded, in fact! All sections of the media seemed to be there, that evening. Yes, there were TV cameras, both indoors and outdoors – and this was after the exhibition having been featured, on at least one Breakfast TV programme. So, did every knitter and stitcher – both secret and well-known, decide they had to be there? Who knows! As far as we were concerned, we were glad everyone was present, as it created a pleasant atmosphere for our first time to see the both floors of the Council, each filled with a variety of exhibits to both admire and interact with. The press release had more information about the, “Knit 2 Together” exhibition, saying it, ‘highlights the work of 15 international artists who are pushing perceived boundaries within knitting, and features a range of innovative and experimental work created with both new and traditional techniques. By exploring areas of tradition and history, process, skill, materiality, individuality and future technologies, Knit 2 Together celebrates the creative potential and contemporary appeal of this craft tradition.’ These artists – about two-thirds of which are from the UK, are: Françoise Dupré; Andy Diaz Hope; Kelly Jenkins; Ruth Lee; Marie-Rose Lortet; Rachael Matthews & Cast Off; Susie McMurray; Janet Morton; Celia Pym; Freddie Robins; Takehiko Sanada; Donna Wilson; Stephanie Speight; Jemma Sykes & Shane Waltener.

Sadly, we missed the opportunity to talk to any of them, as we had to dash down the Pentonville Road, to catch yet another event, listed on HowToEnjoy.co.uk. But, between now and May, you should make some time to enjoy the interactive area, which, ‘will encourage visitors to share their first memories of knitting, enabling them to fully engage with the work on show in this major exhibition.’ Finally, the release ends by stating, ‘Knit 2 Together is curated by craft editor Katy Bevan and artist Freddie Robins. Knit 2 Together is the Crafts Council’s first knitting exhibition since 1986 and will tour the UK in 2005 as part of The Knitting and Stitching Shows.’ So, you have these two months to get in vogue, get down and visit. Otherwise, get along to Alexandra Palace in mid-October, or even - boat it / bus it - to Harrogate or possibly Dublin, in November.
