August 18/19 2005, Thursday/Friday, 6pm/9pm (continues until August 20/21 2005, Saturday/Sunday, from 3pm on both days)LAST WEEK OF THREE-WEEK, “TRAFALGAR SQUARE FESTIVAL,” WITH MUSIC (BOTH TRADITIONAL & OPERA) PLUS PERFORMANCES FROM MADRID, THE NETHERLANDS, ETC., REFLECTING, “THE CITY CELEBRATES,” SPREAD OVER FOUR DAYSOne of the recent press
releases from the Mayor’s office enlightened us about an interesting and very
international event taking place this weekend…, ‘The Trafalgar Square Festival
features work being seen in the UK for the first time, plus brand new
commissions from the UK and overseas, and has been devised to respond to the
historic surroundings of the square, whilst reflecting the vibrancy and energy
of London as a modern city. The Trafalgar Square Festival's overall theme is
City Rites and reflects on modern life in the capital. Each week focuses on a
different idea.’ The release then goes on to quote Ken Livingstone. ‘The Mayor
said: “Historically, Trafalgar Square has always been a space for people to come
together, whether in protest or celebration. Since we improved it, the square
has experienced a renaissance and is now widely considered to be more than an
iconic tourist attraction, or somewhere to sit or meet people. It has become
London's stage and one of the world's most exciting outdoor venues.” Performing
on all four days is Yellow Earth’s “Chinese Two-Step: 1925-2005,” which the
press release tells us that, ‘The colour red will envelop the Square as wedding
dances follow the changing styles from the 1950s to the present day.’
Thursday sees the
London premiere of a “Clockwork” performance by Warner & Consorten (The
Netherlands). Friday sees “Red Earth,” come to the Square, ‘…to create an
extraordinary and evocative performance combining music, dance, fire and water
effects.’ Saturday sees performaces by, ”In the Dhol Drums by Dhol Academy/Walk
the Plank,” ”Kinetica Bloco” and ”Samsalamat” whilst Sunday sees performances
