we attended a private view and excellent summer party – organised by the gallery
“Haunch of Venison,” located in the street/yard of the same name – we picked up
the press release of their current show, “Changes of Mind: Belief and
Transformation.” Little did we know that, only hours later, London’s transport
system would be ripped apart by the senseless acts of several suicide bombers.
What was going through their minds? What were their beliefs? How had they been
transformed? We may never know! But – getting quickly back to what we initially
started talking about - if you are interested in minds, beliefs and
transformations, you will be interested in what the, “Haunch of Venison,” is
currently exhibiting. According to their press release ‘Changes of Mind is a
group show that brings together works in a range of media that explore concepts
of belief and transformation. The artists [Nathan Coley, Roberto Cuoghi, Douglas
Gordon, Mariko Mori, Olaf Nicolai, Pietro Roccasalva, Magda Totheva & Bill
Viola] presenting work in the exhibition come from diverse cultural backgrounds
and are at different stages of their careers – from emerging to internationally
acclaimed.’
The release, later,
goes on to say, ‘The idea of spiritual or intellectual transformation links the
works in Changes of Mind. Frequently drawing on their own cultural and
individual histories, each of the artists examines how people, whether
individually or en masse, come to terms with their own identity and changes in
their lives. What emerges are contemporary perceptions of who we are and how we
cope, whether rooted in politics, history, or more personally in discontentment,
angst or inner growth – to varying degrees of positive or negative effect. At
the crux of all the works is the notion of belief – tangible or intangible – and
the power of the mind to conjure a constantly shifting image of self.’ So, bring
yourselves along to discover more!
