September 1 2005, Thursday, 11am-7pm (continues until September 3 2005, Saturday, by appointment)CAROLINE UNDERWOOD’S LIGHT-INSPIRED, “NOT HERE: PAINTINGS, PRINTS & DRAWINGS” - BEING EXHIBITED ON FULHAM’S MOORE PARK ROAD - FEATURES SOLENT (ISLE OF WIGHT) SEASCAPES, LONDON WATERCOLOURS, BASKETWORK PLUS NUMEROUS STUDIES OF TREES…WHETHER, “BLOOMING,” OR IN FROST, MIST OR SNOWOver 30 works
are on show in Woolwich-born Caroline Underwood’s solo exhibition, “Not
Here: Paintings, Prints & Drawings,” which has been on at Fulham’s
Lennox Gallery since the opening reception, last Monday. In the artist’s
own words, the exhibition, ‘represents an exploration into light effects
and the positive and negative spaces created by natural light.’ Caroline
continues, by saying, ‘My work is about my appreciation of nature’s
atmospheres and aesthetics. Before I moved to London in 2000 I was
combining weekly life drawing with abstract paintings about the moods
created by natural environments. Since leaving Chelsea in 2003 I have
been concentrating on ways to refresh the drawing aspect of my practise,
and this has resulted in my refreshed commitment to working in a
sketchbook alongside my studio work, and a renewed interest in
printmaking techniques.’ And as you enter the gallery, from street
level, you are surrounded by a number of her tree pictures - mainly
silkscreen prints, though there are also spray-painted works and, to a
lesser degree, acrylics. Prices for all these range from £60 up to £260.
You will see trees blooming, in frost, in mist and in snow. And to
follow the artist’s chosen theme of light, which runs throughout the
show’s two floors, there are even backlit trees as well as prints of the
four seasons. And in what season were her Solent Seascapes produced? You
will need to go downstairs - to the gallery’s lower level - in order to
find out! Five Solent Seascapes are hung on the wall for you to
contemplate and appreciate. At a guess, we think the ink and gesso on
board depicting, “Norris Castle,” (£600) hidden in amongst the trees,
catches most people’s eye. It does resemble Windsor Castle, doesn’t it?
Then you might think it does not!
And what about,
“Lit Mainland,” (£600) which clearly shows the Solent, the expansive
mass of water, which runs between the Isle of Man and England. Do you
think it is calm and emotional, or is it tempestuous and rough? One clue
could be that Caroline is a sailing enthusiast, and for sailing one
needs the wind. But, when you have decided, look on the wall opposite
and you will see our favourites… two watercolours entitled, “London’s
burning” (£220 each). Caroline tells us that the tones used in these two
works were inspired by the works of JMW Turner, though, without the
colour Turner used when he painted his own scenes of our beautiful
capital city. But what of our artist-friend’s other inspirations and
influences? ‘Some of my greatest inspirations are British contemporary
printmaker Norman Ackroyd,… Aubrey Beardsley, Frank Auerbach, German
Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and the Impressionists. Other
recent influences include George Sand, Max Ernst, John Virtue, James
McNeill Whistler, April Gornak and Anselm Kiefer.’ At which point, we
strongly suggest that - like Vikings from years gone by - you use Nordic
influences and sail into Fulham, either today (until 7pm) or Friday
(11am until late-opening 10pm), and discover more about Caroline’s
light-inspired artworks.
