October 8 2005, Saturday, 11am-7pmLAST LOVELY “CHOCOLATIE” DISGUSTING “PINKY” DAY FOR, “LOVELYDISGUSTING,” EXHIBITION BY FOUR CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS GRADUATES… WIDELY-TRAVELLED BEAN, FROM BARNET PLUS PROJECT’S “PEPPERY” / “IMAGERY” CONTRIBUTIONS FROM FUKADA, KUBO & YAMANOUCHI, ALL FROM JAPAN AND TWO OF WHICH ARE TOKYO-BORN TALENTS Four
Central Saint Martins graduates have come together for, “LOVELYDISGUSTING,”
which – as the name suggests, is a clever, thought-provoking
salt-and-peppery, sweet-and-sour visual feast of stuff in the media that
people may love and, yet, be put off by. The talented artists, each
involved here in creating several “projects,” are Debra Transes Bean (DFBean),
Yusu Kubo, Yoko Fukada and Miki Yamanouchi. Below, we have briefly
outlined no more than three projects, which each has produced. So,
starting with the widely-travelled artist, Debra Tarnses Bean (known as
DFBean), who we met at the exhibition’s late-night and entertaining
private view, last Wednesday. Bean’s projects include, “Digitally
Printed First Edition Wallpaper Sample,” which basically is patterned
pink wallpaper (220cm x 120cm) and about half a dozen, ‘white satin
digitally printed…,’ cushions (£45 each), each with a, ‘…limited edition
chandelier and handbag design.’ Handbag fans will love her,, “LollyGobbleBagBomb,”
described as, ‘spearmint emerald green and sweet citric orange clear
cast resin timeless handbag sculptures’ (£650 each). Originally, Yusu
Kubo was the first of the four we met. He happened to be on gallery
duty, at the time we passed by last Monday. Kubo has eight 24cm x 30cm,
“Bond/Bound girl forever,” drawings downstairs. They feature a range of
stationery. Clips, compass, correction fluid, feather duster, scissors,
sellotape, set square and stapler have all been included, each with a
girl, who is either tied up or otherwise bound in some eye-opening
fashion. Thankfully each drawing is not individually chocolate-covered,
like all the individually stationery items that make up his
out-of-this-world, flying-saucer inspired, “Encounter,” (£150), but
still… they were just as attention grabbing! Maybe it was thanks to the
light shining from Miki Yamanouchi’s. “New Table Lamp Collection,” which
sadly is not for sale. Yamanouchi’s other works are photographic prints,
namely, “Euphoripta Petroliensis” (£800, 36” x 24”) and “Portraits of
people I met in 2005” (£650, 20” x 16”), both of which have
substantially smaller versions, inexpensively priced between £80 and
£150.
Last, but not least,
Yoko Fukada has two paintings (£750 each). One is with a Pink cactus and one is
with a Green cactus, with each having what she refers to as, “Saltandpepper.”
Continuing with her salty/peppery theme, her large cowhide rag can be found
sprawled out in the gallery’s basement – close to Kubo’s extraterrestrial craft,
“Encounter” - while her small cushion, of a similar cowhide texture, can be
found on the ground floor. Pricing for the rag and cushion is £850 and £580
respectively. Well worth a visit. We left the exhibition… and the area… just
thinking, how appropriate! LOVELYDISGUSTING in Shepherd’s Market! It is a
location where one can find wonderful bars, cafes and restaurants, serving
LOVELY food and refreshments in a wonderfully ambient atmosphere, whilst -
literally, on the other side of the street and hidden away – we guess, possibly
upstairs, in a room of ill-repute, one senses there could be some, “DISGUSTING,”
goings-on taking place. Then again, could the area be the best of both worlds? Promote YOUR event, for free! | Return to October 2005 ArchivesSubscribe to, "hteL FREE-TO-ATTEND," only £59.80 per annum |
