LAST MONTH FOR NAPLES-BORN MADRAS/NEW YORK-BASED ARTIST, FRANCESCO CLEMENTE’S EXHIBITION OF LARGE-SCALE SELF-PORTRAIT OILS ON LINEN, ALONGSIDE PASTELS ON PAPER

We are grateful for a press release from the Gagosian Gallery, about the gallery's current exhibition of over two-dozen artworks, "Francesco Clemente: Self Portraits." The release - in its early stages - looks at the theme of self-portraiture, present in the artist's work, `In this collection of work Clemente returns to a theme he has explored throughout his career - the self-portrait. Art is often about the artists confronting himself. Concerns with ways of seeing, with ageing and death, with the ego and the superego are themes explored throughout art history, from Durer to Velasquez to Kahlo. Francesco Clement consciously picks up on this, fusing his images into an extremely personal mythology, while at the same time commenting on issues of tradition, imagination, and the significance of antiquity and modernity.' The release also looks at his life, abilities and collaborations, `Born in 1952 in Naples, Francesco Clemente has lived in New York for 25 years, while working for extended periods in Madras, India. He works in many different media, including oil, pastel, watercolour, fresco, sculpture and printed books.

The artist has collaborated with several poets including Robert Creeley and Allen Ginsberg. Clemente has exhibited at numerous museums worldwide, including Clement, at retrospective at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1999), which travelled to Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (2000).' And, in addition to London (2002), Spain and USA, Clemente has also had solo exhibitions in Cologne, Dublin, Reykjavik & Trento in the last five years. We attended the opening reception for the exhibition, in early December 2005, and liked what we saw. Go along and discover more for yourself.
