RED GATE GALLERY’S, “EARTH RUNNING: ERRANDS RUN IN THE LIFE OF DONOVAN REID,” EXHIBITION OF VISUAL POETRY, STRONG ON FONTS & TYPOGRAPHYJUST ONE OF SEVERAL EXHIBITIONS - THIS MONTH - WITH FOUR-HOUR PRIVATE VIEWS, ON COLDHARBOUR LANE, NEAR LOUGHBOROUGH JUNCTION & QUITE NEAR BRIXTON TUBE STATION

We are grateful to the Brixton-based, “Red Gate Gallery,” for information received (as well as ad inserted, on HowToEnjoy.info) about one of several exhibitions that they are having this month. For, what is little under a week, it is the turn of the visual poet, Donovan Reid to take up the exhibition space, with his, “Earth Running: Errands run in the life of Donovan Reid” exhibition. Here is an extract of, the gallery’s statement / ad at HowToEnjoy.info, about the artist’s typographical artworks, ‘Over the past few years Reid has developed a particular interest in the meaning of fonts and typography. He feels that the strength of letter formation should not be underestimated and that fonts can convey very particular connotations within our social conscience. As for example ‘impact’ can be used to send a straight to the point statement; ‘Times New Roman’ signifies a message of social and political importance; ‘courier new’ is useful for sending a message on personal issues. Other reasons for his interest in using typography is the way text can be placed and read. Reid felt that he had to totally throw out all conventional ways of reading from left to right and provoke the reader to ‘decipher’ or ‘seek out’ what he was saying by using the typographical and visual codes incorporated within his artwork.

These ‘codes’ or ‘signifiers’ can despite their artistic use be understood by the ‘reader’ as they are part of our western visual and typographical dialectic. The artist’s texts therefore make use of everything e.g. reading back to front, upside down, right to left, vertical and horizontal, shading overlapping, 3D effects with an explosion of colours similar to what graffiti artist did in the 80s.....’ All sounds like a, “textual,” treat, in the typographical sense of the word! So, go along and enjoy some visual earth poetry.
