BRUNEL ENGINE HOUSE (JUST ABOVE THAMES TUNNEL, COMPLETED IN 1843) PRESENTS, “ARCHI-LYRIC,” EXHIBITION OF B&W PHOTOGRAPHS - BY MOSCOW-BORN, ELENA KARTINTSEVA AND CURATED BY OLGA KORZHWHICH REFER TO BICENTENARY OF ISAMBARD K. BRUNEL

We are grateful for an e-mail, recently received from Olga Korzh, curator of a photography exhibition which is currently running at the Brunel Engine House, based in Rotherhithe. Here is an extract of what the release says, beginning, ‘‘The exhibition should be a delight and a tribute to the architects, who made objects for our contemplation, which are equal to Nature - not just a bridge but a symbol, not just a tower but a power of a city, a power of time. They left a biggest gift for everybody: the music of architecture, the poetry of geometry.’ It continues by taking a look at the photographer herself, ‘Elena is a London based Russian painter and photographer, born in Moscow. Graphic designer and illustrator by profession, educated at Moscow Academy of Publishing (1992-1997, MA in Fine Art Honour with distinction, A.A.Livanov studio) and Moscow Academy of Photography (2000, Pavel Smirnov's studio). Elena's artwork is poetical and tends toward the telling of stories. Whereas her photographs are mirrors of life's moments tending toward classical sensation, with strong graphical compositions guided by her designer's eyes.

The photographs are less impressionistic and more contemplative than her paintings. Her brushes tell stories, the silver through her lens creates the trance.’ And about the exhibition, ‘For this exhibition we have chosen black and white pictures full of contemplation and meditation, inspired by tectonic objects, showing a lyrical nature of her photographs, evoking a grateful sense of quiet and seclusion, hence the exhibitions title “Arhi-lyric: the Poetry of Architecture”.’ Sounds interesting! Go along and have a look, both at the photographs and at that Thames Tunnel!
