Abstracts are usually parts of something much more detailed. Business people and university lecturers are usually very busy, so have little time! They sometimes prefer to read abstracts of longer pieces of writing. This helps give them the "jist" of what is being said. Abstracts usually appear at the beginning of a piece of writing.
