You catch an object, or person/people, with your
hands and/or arms. But, then, you can catch a cold or flu without using
your hands or arms. So, a definition that is somewhat ambiguous! In
London, you catch a bus at a bus stop and catch a train at a train
station. In American Football (see photograph, on the left) they seem to
catch the ball a lot, but not in the various English football leagues...
unless it is the goalie, saving the ball. A catch is generally seen as
being lucky. 'He is a good catch,' a parent says to her recently-engaged
daughter. The photograph on the right shows a young boy catching his
hat. 'How lucky,' he must be saying to himself. If the wind had
been much stronger - like in a
storm or hurricane - he
probably would not have caught it.
