"FERVOUR AND HUMILITY" GROUP SHOW, ORGANISED BY WHITE SPACE GALLERY, FEATURES WORKS BY THREE RUSSIAN ARTISTS: KLIOT, ROSSINE & SHINKAREV
Works by three Russian artists: Vladimir Shinkarev, Solomon Rossine and the late Alexander Kliot, are on show in London's Cork Street, in an exhibition entitled, "Fervour and Humility." According to the brochure, which we received at the exhibition's private view last Tuesday, "Fervour" is applied to Rossine, who was born in the late thirties, and "Humility" is applied to Shinkarev - born over 15 years later. Another characteristic, "Intensity", is applied to Kliot who - before he died in 1998 - was roughly the same age as his peer, Shinkarev. Rossine - who has previously exhibited widely in France - is showing 18 works, ranging from £1,200 up to £10,000 (though nearly half of them are priced at £1,500). Shinkarev is showing the same number of pieces, including our favourite: the 1997 "The Fir-Tree" oil-on-canvas (110cm x 76cm) at £5,500. His other works range in price from £1,500 up to £6,500. Kliot's works, as one would imagine, are some of the highest priced. £17,000 is being sought for his 1995 "Hampstead Heath" oil-on-canvas. His other works range in price from £2,000 up to £12,500. Discover more yourself, make this one of gallery stops today in a street which is crammed full of commercial art galleries Telephone 020 8740 4675 or e-mail [e-mail address removed] for more information, if required. Location: "Gallery 27", Cork Street, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines). http://www.whitespacegallery.co.uk

AFTER LUXEMBOURG... YOUR CHANCE TO SEE NEW YORK GALLERY'S "AUTUMN MEMORIES": PAINTED SCENES OF LONDON'S PARKS, AS WELL AS CITYSCAPES IN FRANCE, HOLLAND, ITALY & VIETNAM - BY VIETAMESE ARTIST, PHAM LUAN
Today is the last day to see the two-week exhibition of recent works by Vietnamese artist, Pham Luan, who is in his late forties. It has been organised by the New York art gallery, Judith Hughes Day. We met Judith - along with the artist - shortly after the show opened, earlier this month. The exhibition, comprising 27 scenic canvases, spread over two floors, is entitled, "Autumn Memories: Pham Luan's Paintings of Hanoi and Beyond." As this title suggests, and according to what the promotional leaflet states, .'..Pham Luan paints the ancient streets of his hometown, Hanoi, as well as other special places he admires: London, Venice, Amsterdam and Giverney.' And, like the artist's travels, this exhibition has also travelled and been seen by many - before it heads back to the Big Apple and state of bluebirds and roses. People in Luxembourg recently had a chance to appreciate the artist's strong, broad paint strokes and numerous shades of green! These shades of green is what we liked in his picture, "Strolling in Green Park, 2003." It is an oil-on-canvas (60cm x 90cm), priced at £3,000, and shows a young couple with pram, along with a seated figure in the park nearest to London's Cork Street. A perfect match for this masterpiece, on anyone's wall, would probably have to be the identically sized and already sold, "St James Park 2003." Also an oil-on-canvas, it reveals a scene from another of London's beautiful parks. Prices for Pham's other works range from £2,200 up to £13,000. Go along to discover other worlds as well as scenes of our own world, here in London. Admission free. Telephone 020 7734 7010 (during exhibition times) for more information, if required. Location: Arndean Gallery, 23 Cork Street, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines). http://www.imagesvietnam.com

DID YOU KNOW THAT IN WEST KENSINGTON YOU CAN DISCOVER BHUTAN, TREES, "DEER", CERAMICS, FASHION, "JAPANESE BOOK", ETC., THANKS TO MALI'S GROUP SHOW OF FIVE ARTISTS FROM CAMBODIA & INDIA
Today is the last day to see the art exhibition, "Mali and Friends: Contemporary Art Work" at the Institute of Indian Culture, "Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan." Mali has lined up several artists: Vinita Khanna Hassard; Jaya Patel; Jill Rock; Ibrahim Wagh; Khin You and himself for an interesting show of contemporary art in a large, well lit gallery in West Kensington. Let us see what we found, when we went along earlier this month. Vinita Khanna Hassard - one of the artists we spoke to at the exhibition's opening - has seven landscapes on show. They have been put together using watercolour on board (4) and a variety of original mixed media: plastic bags, packaging and ink on Perspex (2) and another, similar one but without the packaging. We liked her "Somewhere in Bhutan." Jaya Patel is displaying photographs of crystals, nature and trees. On a similar theme Jill Rock finds pieces of wood - in places like Wimbledon Common - and decorates them by adding layers of good adhesive paint, has ten pieces on show. These range in price from £120 up to £750. Ibrahim Wagh - a paper ceramic enthusiast, who has lived in England since 1961 - has seven works on show, which range in price from £150 up to £950. His works are mainly Glass Enamels on Metal (4), with the remaining - including our favourite "Human Kite", a large diamond-shaped picture with a face mask and model of a body attached - being Paper and Ceramics (3). Cambodia-born artist Khin You, settled in Twickenham in 1999, after - seemingly, having had over thirty years of solo shows in numerous countries: Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and - most recently, in the mid nineties - Qatar. His oil and string paintings we learnt are a celebration of "togetherness." They range in price from £200 up to £1,500, and feature a range of fashion-related themes, including female figures and shoes in various locations: "Black Woman"; "Women Suffering"; "Woman On Black Chair"; "Red Shoe On The Stage" and "Black Shoe In The Desert." Females and shoes - in our mind, always together and definitely inseparable! Like some men are with their golf-trolleys or play stations (just to balance the argument)! Mali - from Bombay in India and whose mixed media (encased miniature books in white casings) we have written about before on these web pages, has 10 titled works on show. Nine of them are for sale, including "Pushkalani", a mixed media work in four parts. The rest of his collection, on show at this first-floor gallery, is £500 apiece. With 25 solo shows and 90 group shows under his belt, Mali certainly has a depth of experience - as well as numbers of people, that have both seen and bought his works - that any book publisher would relish. Today you have a chance to join others by going along to the last day of the group show, of artists brought together by Mali. E-mail Mali at [e-mail address removed] for more information about the artists and exhibits or telephone 020 7381 3086 for more information, if required, about the venue. Location: The Bhavan Centre, 4a Castletown Road, London, W14. Tube station: West Kensington (District line).
